Columnist, Emma James-Jenkinson, talks BGT, the Sparkle Awards & winning the Dance World Cup…

Hi, remember me from the first Power of Women publication? I am Emma, I am 20 years old and I am a dancer, teacher and businesswoman. Here’s an update since I last wrote for POW:

I hope you managed to see Unity’s Semi-Final appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. We did not get through to the final but we had the best time. Wrabel, who wrote the iconic – The Village – flew over from LA to watch us in the semi-final and got someone to drive him to Liverpool to spend the day in Jelli Studio with us. We did some dance classes together and made a music video with him for The Village which he has shared taking our joint message about equality across the world. The Village has had over 100 Million streams now on Spotify and I could not be happier for my friend.

At the beginning of June, I was nominated, and won, a Merseyside Sparkle Award for Dance and Performing Arts. Claire Simmo presented me with my Award. The Sparkle Awards celebrate young people in Merseyside.

I was also chosen to represent Team England again at the Dance World Cup in Braga Portugal. We had a fabulous time and lots of fun – and Gin if I am being honest. We did become WORLD CHAMPIONS though and I brought home a gold medal.

I have done some modelling for the Buyers Club with the lovely Leanne Campbell from Radio City and have been signed by an agency called ‘VisABLE People’ who support disabled artists find work in films, TV and modelling.

At Everyone Move, we have started presenting at conferences sharing our story, passion for dance and inclusion to help people understand what is possible. We are dreaming about doing more teaching and having a studio space where we could support more disabled dancers to train as dance leaders with our dance artist friends so we can grow our business and support our community. We are looking for some accessible space, like a college who has big ideas and is interested in working with us and making some money along the way – so not a huge ask! If we decide we will do this, then it will happen one day; watch this space.

Emma.
