Stop Apologising!

By Tara Rule

Imagine talking with confidence. Imagine feeling confident. Imagine believing in yourself and confidently achieving all that you want in life.

What would you do with more confidence? What would you achieve? How would your life be different?

When you repeatedly say “Sorry for interrupting” or “Sorry, this may be a stupid question” it’s often because you suffer from a lack of confidence and a noisy inner critic who’s saying” You’re not good enough” or “You have to be perfect”.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Tara learnt to tackle her extremely loud inner critic which inspired her to write her number one best-selling book Stop Apologising.

Tara brings her Positive Psychology and professional coaching experience to life through vulnerable, raw and real stories. They will help you reframe what you say to others and – more powerfully – what you say to yourself.

Stop Apologising helps you believe in yourself, back yourself… and stop saying sorry in order to achieve what you want in life.

She’s an International Positive Psychology coach, speaker and best-selling author, helping busy professionals and business owners play to their strengths, succeed without sacrifice and create a life they love, so they don’t let fear get in the way of reaching their potential like she nearly did!

“Stop and ask yourself ‘Do I need to apologise right now?’ often the answer is no“

Tara’s 5 Steps to Stop Apologising

  1. Realise why you’re apologising – Is it a habit? Were you given feedback that you’re too aggressive or direct? Do you feel like you don’t deserve to be in the room? Once you realise your why it’s so much easier to make a change.
  2. Be consciously aware of what you say – Become aware of the language you use, both to others and to yourself. What are your go-to phrases?
  3. Tackle your inner critic – Tune into that critical voice, what are they saying to you? But know that your inner critic is trying to protect you.
  4. Listen to your inner cheerleader – What are they trying to tell you? Take a moment to listen to them. They’ll be telling you the truth so listen!
  5. Create your list of replacement phrases – Write your apologetic phrases and replacements. ‘Sorry for being late’ could be ‘Thank you for your patience’ and ‘Sorry this may be a stupid question’ could simply be ‘I have a question’.

By taking these steps, you’ll sound more assertive and more importantly, you’ll feel more assertive, which will boost your confidence.
