How the Moon Effects us as Women with Self- Care Rituals for New Moon and Full Moon

A woman’s superpower is her intuition. Yet, in our modern-day society, it’s the very thing that we’re disconnected from the most. With so much demand for our attention, we’ve become over-stimulated, anxious and inflamed. Mental and physical health issues in women are on the rise, and infertility rates are increasing. It’s scientifically proven that the reason for these imbalances in our bodies is due to mental, physical and emotional stress. We’re burning ourselves out completely.

In Astrology, the moon is a feminine planet. She’s the mother of the planets. Since the beginning of time, women have always felt a calling to follow the moon. We recognise that the moon influences our emotions. We as human beings are made up of 60% of water, so if the moon can move the tides of the ocean, it can move the emotions within our bodies. When we were more connected to the seasons and cycles that nature offers us, we would menstruate in rhythm with the phases of the moon. The full moon is the time of ovulation and the new moon is the time of our bleed (period). But over time, we’ve become less connected to nature and therefore we’ve lost our instinctive relationship with the moon. This occurred when women fought for our rights to work, which needed to happen in order for us to claim our autonomy, but it’s tipped too far the other way. Now, we live in a society where it’s normal for women to work like men, even though our bodies aren’t designed to do so. It’s normal to work through a bleed and continue with the same routine no matter what phase the moon is in. As we continue to push through and disregard what our body is telling us, we lose touch with our intuition.

Now, I know most of you reading this are probably already telling yourself that this would be an impossible way for you to live with all of the responsibilities you have on your plate. I understand. Most of us cannot live a life as perfect as this right now, but what we can do is recognise that we are still cyclical beings and we wax and wane, just like the moon. So if we care for ourselves in a way that serves us when there’s a full moon and a new moon, we can become much more connected to our intuition and therefore begin to thrive as women, rather than merely survive. Through connecting to the phases of the moon, we’re honouring our essential need for rest, peace and healing.

There’s also a deeper aspect to the moon’s cycles that offers us opportunities to grow on a spiritual level. During each phase, the moon moves through a different astrological sign. Therefore, each New and Full Moon brings a different theme to our lives. Each astrological sign, which you may know as a star sign, represents each life area of the human experience. For example, Gemini represents the human mind- how we think and communicate. Another example is Libra, which represents how we relate to those who we are in personal relationships with, particularly romantic and business partnerships. If we had a New Moon in Libra, energetically, we would be feeling more of a focus on our personal relationships at that time. There would be a sense of starting afresh in the way we relate. If we had a Full Moon in Gemini, we would be feeling the immense pressure that has built up in our minds that is affecting how we are able to think and communicate. Under this moon, we’d feel the urge to release old thought patterns or ways of communicating that don’t serve us.

I’ve been working with the moon for the last 4 years, and holding Sacred Moon Rituals around each New Moon and Full Moon with like-minded women. We gather under the moon to self-reflect, rebalance our energy, manifest and release through yin yoga, meditation and journaling. Each ritual is designed to harness and channel the energy based on the sign that the moon has fallen into. I talk about the energy of this moon and how it’s affecting you individually and collectively. I typically hold the rituals in a very sacred space during the spring, summer and autumn months. This space is charged with crystals and lunar energy so the healing effects are amplified! If this is something that you’d be interested in then please get in touch, it would be a pleasure to have you join us.

If you cannot physically attend a ritual, you can join me online on my website www.spirit-ignited.com Or if you would like to do something yourself under the lunar energies then here are some Self-Care Rituals that you can do at the time of a New and Full Moon…

New Moon

A New Moon is a dark moon. It’s the beginning of a lunar cycle and an opportunity to set intentions for the month ahead. Because the moon is dark and out of sight, there’s less energy emitting from it. This makes us feel tired, withdrawn and introspective. We feel less drawn to social events and feel more like staying in the safety of our home environment. We are called to rest, but not just lying on the sofa and watching movies. We are called to let ourselves indulge in soul-fulfilling rest. Here’s some self-care practices that you can do to nurture yourself under each New Moon…

  • Physical Rest: Get an extra hour of sleep
  • Mental Rest: Listen to a Yoga Nidra Meditation
  • Energetic Rest: Schedule some alone time in your diary on the day of the New Moon
  • Mental Rest: Practice presence when eating (mindful eating) or making yourself a cup of your favourite drink
  • Mental Rest: Take a walk in nature
  • Physical Rest: Stretch
  • Emotional Rest: Journal, and set your intentions!

Full Moon

A Full Moon is when the moon is a complete circle in the sky. When the moon is full, the energy emitting from it is strong. As we as humans are made up of energy, we are affected by the moon’s fullness. We may feel more energised than usual, sometimes to the point of feeling anxious. The Full Moon affects our sleep, so we can often experience insomnia during the days leading up to, during and just after the full moon. The full moon often brings us to a feeling of breaking point, as we feel a sudden need to release something that is no longer serving us. During the Full Moon, we are called to move. This can be physically through exercise or by taking action in our lives! Here are some self-care practices that you can do to harness the energy under each Full Moon…

  • This is a good time to move! Whether it be Yoga, Walking, Dance or any other form of physical activity. We are called to release our energy through movement
  • Take a Cleansing Bath – Use bath salts to cleanse your Aura. You can also take your crystals into the bath with you to cleanse them!
  • Stand barefoot on the grass – if you can do it on the night of the full moon even better!
  • Spend time in nature to calm the frantic energy
  • Take action on your dreams! You have already set the intentions at the time of the New Moon, so now it is your time to put in the inspired action to make your dreams become reality.
