Saturday, 8th March 2025, marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements and a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality. Observed since the early 1900s, this day reflects a pivotal moment in history when women began campaigning for their rights in earnest. The courage and determination of those trailblazers have shaped the freedoms many enjoy today, but their mission is far from complete.
This year’s theme is a call to action: how can we celebrate and support the women in our lives and communities?
Celebrate Achievements
One way to honour International Women’s Day is by recognising the accomplishments of the women around us. Whether it’s a friend who’s juggling a busy career and family, a colleague who’s breaking barriers in the workplace, or a local businesswoman championing innovation, take the time to acknowledge their hard work. Share their stories, support their ventures, and let them know their efforts are valued.
Build Connections
Women are stronger together, and International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to strengthen bonds within our communities. With this in mind, we invite you to join us at our free monthly women’s networking group, held every last Wednesday of the month in Portabello, Ormskirk, at 12pm. These gatherings are a wonderful chance to meet like-minded women, share ideas, and build lasting connections. Power of Women is committed to hosting events and publishing stories that celebrate women’s contributions. You could also find similar initiatives in your area and get involved.
Advocate for Change
While we’ve made incredible progress, the fight for gender equality continues. Use this day to advocate for policies that uplift women, from equal pay to improved access to education and healthcare. Raise your voice on issues that matter—whether through social media, volunteering, or joining campaigns that champion women’s rights.
Support Other Women
Sometimes, small actions can make a big difference. Mentor a young woman just starting her career, support female-owned businesses, or simply be a source of encouragement for someone facing challenges. Tell a woman you know how much they inspire you or tell them how much you love them. By lifting each other up, we create a ripple effect of positivity and progress.
Reflect and Inspire
International Women’s Day is also a time for self-reflection. Consider how far we’ve come as a society and as individuals, but also think about what’s next. What steps can you take to empower the women around you? What legacy do you want to leave for future generations?
As we celebrate International Women’s Day in 2025, let’s honour the women who paved the way for our freedoms and commit to continuing their fight. Together, we can ensure that the world becomes an even better place for women—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
Happy International Women’s Day!
